dem and sex in the city

There’s no better way to watch a movie about fabulous best friends than to watch it with your actual fabulous best friends. It’s like looking together in the mirror of yourselves through times of fun, flings, flirtations, fashionable pieces, and fine-tuned friendships. This movie is about us in a hundred different ways.
 

So Leng and Rubs invited us to watch Sex and the City movie on a Saturday with the come-on, “when was the last time we watched a movie together?”. I remembered they were few and far between. Most notably, Music and Lyrics, Star Wars Episode 1 The phantom menace premiere and all the Winona Ryder movies during high school and college (She is a bonafide dem icon, maybe because she’s the first of my many obsessions, and I guess it stuck to the whole group..) Anyway, a DEM get-together is the only befitting homage to our  fave HBO series. Just that Leng and Rubs watched it ahead on the premiere showing day just to check if it was the one movie we should all go out and see. (Ang daya!) It’s very difficult to match schedules nowadays. We have the most diverse professions – a doctor, an IT manager, corporate yuppie, a magazine writer and well, as of the moment, resident bum. Some weekends were too hectic, and some others simply had to work on weekends. This Saturday came in as a rare opportunity so we grabbed the chance. I even had to register at Sureseats just to make sure we had seats and that everyone won’t be late. It tool tons of text messages to organize.The movie took 4 years to make since the season finale, getting a dem get-together was almost like that. A bit overdue but splendidly spectacular. =)

So here’s the blow by blow account, for the benefit of those far and away.
 

I crashed at Maui’s place in the afternoon and we decided to help each other shop. Shopping with friends is definitely a warm-up to watching SATC. Maui got her groove -on wearing Ferrari shoes, favorite pants and signature-because-I’m-pregnant-revealing top. She was a tad disappointed in me when I did not allow her to go to the mall wearing a short baby-doll almost see through dress, sans shorts. I am a bit of a prude when it comes to preggy women I assume, and she kept pointing at all the women we saw wearing just exactly that at the mall. She kept saying “See,see, she’s wearing that dress like mine, even shorter and more see-thru)..and I kept saying, “oh yeah but see,see, she’s not pregnant…”Sorry, Maui. Just a bit overprotective. Besides Ferrari shoes go well with favorite pants to a tee. We were supposed to shop for about 3 hours and then get dinner with DEM and then go to the movie. Because of current preggy state, we shopped 30 minutes, ate for an hour, shopped another 30 minutes, then ate for 30 minutes. Eating is a must. And we all know we have to please "the boss". Lucky for the boss, I tossed dieting away and eagerly complied.
 

In true SATC style, we went on to find a smashing suit jacket for me. I was gearing up for a job interview and wanted something impressive to wear. And I am the most difficult type of shopper because I can’t make up my mind on my own that easily. I have to get other people’s opinion and that could take a very, very long while. Finally, Rubs came in to save us. The choices got narrowed down to 2 shops. And she said I have to wear it with a shirt to see the actual look and feel of it. We decided to return to the first shop where I liked the jackets and then tried on 3 different jackets on this super nice baby-doll collar white shirt called “THE” shirt because it was actually more expensive than the jacket. And finally Rubs and Maui found the right jacket, and everyone agreed there wasn’t a more fabulous choice. I bought the jacket but sadly could not afford getting THE shirt because it was ridiculously too expensive.
 

Then we met Leng at Friday’s (we got a PhP500 discount coupon), and got to eating dinner faster than fastfood, because we were hurrying up to catch the start time. Over dinner, the usual chitchat and the standard OB consultation session, “uhm Leng, is it normal…? To uhm Leng..what do i…? To uhm leng..are you sure it’s ok to..”..We’re so lucky to have an OB-G friend. Free advice over dinner. Hahaha. Just spare us the graphic details. Anybody know of turtles and hamburger sideways? Hehehe.
 

We then met Rose who looked absolutely great in newly-colored moviestar rebonded hair, with hubby (with an exam the next day but sweet enough to catch a chick flick with wife) Dax. And we put him in the middle so he could belong. Hahaha. Imagine enduring a movie about a series he hadn’t watched, and being in the company of 5 girls. Hmmm, that definitely is not your average male weekend activity. *Sigh* It must be love.
 

We saw the movie, laughed together at each funny scene. Made “oohs” and “aahs” of ever fabulous outfit. Sighed and gushed at every romantic touchy-feely moments. After the movie Rose and Dax had to leave to study for Dax’s exam so the four of use decided to celebrate with a nightcap at Max Brenner’s. And then the real DEM talk began..

 
This is the classic stuff so I have to share it. I ordered Venezuelan dark chocolate, Leng ordered the Italian chocolate thingy and Rubs ordered the orgasmic mocha frappe, (I can’t remember them exactly) and Maui had “trese martirez” – longanisa, tapa, tocino and fried rice breakfast platter. Hahaha. Just that alone kept us chuckling and heckling throughout. We hadn’t talked in a while and it was a great chance to catch-up on things. Most notably we talked about sex, relationships, outfits, baby names, birthdays and zodiac signs. And with DEM, nothing is left undiscussed or un-laughed at. Classic hirits. Leng’s kid would be "Gee Nee Feir", and Leng was born on the exact date and year as Jolina, and yes, unknown to most she was  a Scorpio. Maui’s kid has a 90% chance of being Gabrielle Violet, was a genuinely crazy Gemini girl, loquacious and Ms. Congeniality. Rubs was the very fickle, very unpredictable Aquarius who unfortunately shared a birth date everyone would remember because of me (hahaha), and no kid’s names at the moment. And I was apparently ms. salawahan, more of Leo than Cancer being in that undefined, rowing on 2 rivers with many tributaries cusp, hahaha, and would likely name my kid Kylie or Adriana. We then talked about the movie and its fine moments, what our favorite dresses were. I liked the pink dress with the pockets and basically all the dresses that showcased SJP’s fabulous ass perched on Manolo Blahniks. Leng liked Charlotte’s clothes as usual. Rubs like the artsy outfits. maui loved the shoes.

When I think about it there’s probably a SATC character in each dembud (disclaimer - totally just my opinion, and no ill-intentions) For Charlotte, Leng most definitely fits her to a tee. Maybe Ais too. Miranda would be most similar to Peng and Rose…hmmm.. Samantha would probably be channeled by Maita and Francia. And Carrie would be mostly Maui. and I guess she’s a little bit in all of us. Me and Rubs? Kind of hard. Rubs would probably be “Anthony”  to Leng’s Charlotte and me “Stanford” to Maui’s Carrie. Hahaha. He does wear glasses and ties. Anyway, just to complete the cast..

But I guess we really do have a lot of Carrie in us all. The in-love-with-love part and the dreamer of fairy-tales part. Carrie is after all a true, blue romantic. And unlike Big, we don’t have to copy words from great men to tell what our hearts feel. (hehehe, what a K pick-up line)

Bottom line, (sorry for the super long almost nonsensical post) it’s really fabulous to have gorgeous best friends who love you for who you are, and who will be there to witness all the events in your life. Through all the joys and even the rotten parts.

So yeah, here’s to you DEM and cheers to you all!! Let’s toast to the rest of our lives SATC style, with  cosmopolitans.. and a mouthful of tapa…clink…clink...=)
