1. Not A Love Song
I think not so good choice for a first track. They should have started with Explode. Although this song probably captures their sound best. Some full-on vocals on well timed synth and lots of bass. A bit too up-tempo to click.
2. Explode
This is the first song I heard from then and absolutely fell in love with. That was about 3 months ago. Vocals are edgy and the beat is fantastic. Like I said, it’s like The Cure put on a girl vocalist. Everyone has to fall in love with Camilla Grey because of this effort. So brilliant.
3. Wait Another Day
THE song about unrequited love. I heard this played acoustic on Boston’s WERS site and it was fantastic. I predict that if they come out with a nice mtv for this, it’s going to be their most memorable hit. This is the most soulful one in the lot. Come on, “I will wait another day to love you..” just says it right.
4. Common Reaction
Good base. If your imagine Leisha Hailey rocking out, this is her song. Who wouldn’t love a song that starts with “hey luv”.
5. Say So – Album Version
I have heard about 4 versions of this song. I was quite surprised that they managed to make it sound better by adding that echoing vocals in the chorus. So far this is the best version. This has the best drumbeat and I think the best one lyrically. When I hear this song, it always puts me in that happy place. It’s the type of song that compels you play it over and over and still, you won’t get tired of it. This is their signature song. And I just love the chorus “ Say so, you want to..” My UHH favorite.
6. Covered
Catchy. Good rhythm but a little forgettable.
7. Everyone
I was absolutely knocked-out by this song. Absolute classic. This is the cherry on top of the sundae. Though it carries a soulful, sad message, this is probably THE dark horse of this album. This song is going to make them classic artists. This song when I heard it made me flashback to my past. Think giddy teenager, holding hands and finding love and discovering the bittersweet with it. This is a must-hear. I think I’ve listen to this more than a couple of times, and it still makes me teary eyed. Maybe just me. What do I do when the song goes “ Everyone is telling us something’s wrong with us…”. Beautiful, just beautiful.
8. Away From Here
Sounds a bit like Garbage. Too edgy and sad. It feels longer than it should be.
9. So long
This sounds more like The Killers with softer vocals. Excellent guitar rifts on this one. Pretty good vocals on an up-tempo indie-rock tone.
10. Dance With Me
Starts like a rock song. Midway it feels like a teeny bopper pop rock effort. I think it seems out of place from the whole lot.
11. Dreamer
I think this is my least favorite one. Too anthemic, too sad, too long. Quite disappointed that the set will end with this one.
But all in all, COMMON REACTION is great. But those 4 songs I highlighted, made it fantastic. Grey’s freakin’ good vocals and soulful piano, Hailey’s base and well-placed harmonies, the return of the synth ---it’s definitely worth a place in your audio collections. Perfect background for a laidback day, when you just want to chill out and reminisce high school funk, the 80’s and yes, lots of LOVE.
